Forest Carbon & Climate Change

Learn about the relationship between climate change, forests, and carbon through the links below.

The Securing Northeast Forest Carbon Program is a collaborative project of the Northeast Foresters Association (NEFA) funded through a grant from the USDA Forest Service. NEFA includes all six New England states and New York. The Securing Northeast Forest Carbon Website provides excellent resources on forest carbon science, forest carbon management, and forest carbon markets, as well as links to all seven state forestry agencies.

Additional information about forest carbon for New Hampshire may be found on the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension Website: Managing for Forest Carbon.

Forest landowners can sell "credits" for carbon sequestered and stored in their forests through formal carbon sale markets. To track the extent of carbon credit program enrollment in New Hampshire, the state legislature passed HB 1697 in 2024 requiring the Department of Natural & Cultural Resources, Division of Forests and Lands to develop and maintain a Forest Carbon Registry. View the N.H. Forest Carbon Registry.

At the request of the New Hampshire Division of Forests and Lands, the Forest Ecosystem Monitoring Cooperative (FEMC) undertook a representative case study at Pisgah State Park to help assess the impacts on forest carbon from timber harvesting on state reservations.
